Calm Abiding Meditation
This meditation is common to many traditions of Buddhism. In this practice, we rest our attention on a simple meditative support. Instead of following thoughts and emotions as we usually do, we train in maintaining our attention to the support.
“From this practice, we can experience a stable and calm mind. We learn to maintain and return to a sense of stillness, no matter what our outer circumstances. The mind is relaxed, alert and aware. The results of this practice are serenity, freedom in the face of circumstances and ultimately, Buddhahood.” ~ Bokar Rinpoche, Meditation for Beginners
Tonglen ~ Taking and Sending Compassion Practice
The Taking and Sending meditation trains us to consider all beings as our kin. Just as we do, all beings want to be happy and avoid suffering. We take all beings as the object of our concern, using our great heart of compassion to make the wish and commitment to relieve them of suffering and bring them genuine happiness.
Tonglen is generally done as a guided meditation that moves us outward from ourselves and our concerns to encompass the reality of others' situation.
