In-person & via Zoom
Tantra is a Sanskrit word that literally means “thread, loom, or warp,” and the Tantras are a genre of texts that skillfully weave together the sutra teachings into visualization practices that enable especially rapid transformation. The related Tibetan term gyu means “continuity,” which can refer to the underlying continuity of our innate buddha nature as well as the continuity of a lineage and transmission that has been passed down for hundreds of years.
Tantric practices “take fruition as the path,” meaning that we experientially connect with our inherent awakened nature using visualization and recitation, and use this as the path of practice until we fully realize this innate buddha nature. Rather than being somewhere far off in the future, we realize that wakefulness, our true nature, is here right now, and connecting with it again and again in these practices purifies the latent tendencies that get in the way of living this everyday.
In this class, we will learn about these basic views and approaches of tantric practice with the guidance of Lama Thubten Yeshe’s wonderful book, Introduction to Tantra. If you have ever wondered what Tantra, Vajrayana, or Yidam practice is all about, or if you have been practicing for a while and want to learn more about the underlying view of these practices, this class is for you.
“Visualization practice works with our relationship to the phenomenal world of appearance and seeks to undermine its solidity and shift it into an alternate, awakened perspective. The basis, or ground, of purification is buddha nature. That which needs purifying or removing are the conceptual and emotional obscurations to this nature, which are merely incidental and not intrinsic to it. That which does the purifying is deity practice. The fruition of purification is full recognition of the ground.”
